Join us as we embark on a quest through the art of world building, step by step, unlocking and simplifying the secrets to forging realms that will captivate the minds and hearts of your players.
Often, we find ourselves paralysed at the outset, unable to set the wheels of creation in motion. Even worse, we lack a clear concept of the imaginary world that will serve as the playground for our game. Consequently, we settle for any map we stumble upon, or more frequently, forgo a map altogether! So what is the solution?
The solution lies in a systematic approach to world building. By breaking down the process into manageable steps, we can navigate the daunting task with ease and confidence. This article will guide you through each stage of creating your own fantasy realm, from conceptualisation to completion. Through practical tips, creative exercises, and insightful guidance, you will learn how to breathe life into your world, crafting rich and immersive environments that will captivate your players' imaginations. So let's embark on this journey together, and unlock the secrets to forging unforgettable adventures in your very own fantasy realm.
Step 1. Create Your Map: Start with the bare necessities, often just a clump of land surrounded by sea will suffice. You can use pencil and paper or your preferred mapmaking tool, whatever works best for you. For this exercise we will be using Wonderdraft. Determine the shape, the size, and landmass type (continent, island, archipelago, etc.) for your world. If you already have a pre-made map to use, skip to step 4.
Step 2. Add Geographical Features to Your Map: Now is the time to start giving your world, and map, some depth. Herein lie the clues to 'what to expect' on your world. Mountains, swamplands, plains, deserts, hills, lakes, rivers, towns, and cities all start the process of bringing your world to life.
Step 3. Name Your World and Locations on Your Map: For our example here, we are calling the world 'Luminastra'. This is the time to unleash your creativity. Dedicate some time to devising intriguing, unique, and captivating names for your world and its various locations. Draw inspiration from your favourite novels, leverage the capabilities of your preferred AI, or utilise tools like ChatGPT. Let the names reflect the essence of the places they represent. What story do the names convey about the locale? Once more, let your imagination run wild!
Step 4. Create Fascinating Descriptions for Your Locations: For our example world, Luminastra, envision the vivid tapestry of its landscapes and locales. Is it a bustling city, or a sleepy seaside port? A dangerous and deadly mountain range, or a perfect ambush location for bandits? What lies at the heart of the deep and dark cavern? Riches? Treasure? Something far more unpleasant? This is where you breathe life into your world! Avoid the mundane, create something memorable and unexpected. Here are some examples from our world:
The Elysian Ocean: The celestial expanse, bathed in ethereal light, mirrors the heavens above. Mystical fogs cloak its embrace, veiling ancient mysteries for intrepid voyagers.
Darkwater Basin: Beneath the tranquil surface of the lake lies a dormant malevolence, its presence felt in the icy depths. Shadows dance beneath the moonlight, whispering of ancient curses and forgotten sorrows. Beware the still waters, for within them lurks a forgotten and hidden evil, biding its time until the moment is ripe to unleash its dark power upon the world above.
The City of Whispers: Amidst the shifting sands, the haunted desert city stands, its ancient secrets veiled in whispers of the wind. Ghostly echoes of bygone eras linger in its deserted streets, while mysterious shadows dance in the moonlight. Within its labyrinthine alleys lie untold treasures and forbidden knowledge, waiting for brave souls to uncover the truth hidden beneath the dunes of time.
Zyn: Hidden among towering peak's shadows, the mountain-base village lies concealed from prying eyes. Its dwellings blend seamlessly with the rugged landscape, nestled in the embrace of ancient stone. Whispering winds carry secrets through narrow passageways, while the village remains a sanctuary of tranquillity amidst the wild majesty of the mountains.
Springshade Forest: In the forest of retribution, ancient trees loom like silent judges, their branches twisted into grotesque shapes. Shadows dance amidst the tangled undergrowth, concealing the echoes of past transgressions. Here, nature exacts its vengeance upon the unwary, ensnaring trespassers in its verdant grasp and leading them on a harrowing journey of penance and redemption.
And there you have it: your very own living, breathing world full of lore and adventure, awaiting the embrace of your players and their characters. Allow your players to help shape the world with the decisions and actions of their characters, and they'll not only enjoy the setting you've created but also your campaign as well.
Great stuff! We are so lucky to have access to programs like Wonderdraft and ChatGPT!!
I hope lots of people have fun creating their worlds 🤩🤩
